Why responsible action must become repeatable, adaptable, and supportable in everyday life and work
Sustainability cannot remain something people agree with in principle. It has to become something they can carry into practice.
Many people recognise the need for change. They understand that current patterns of producing, consuming, organising, travelling, working, and deciding cannot continue unchanged. Organisations formulate ambitions, individuals reconsider habits, and institutions introduce new goals. Yet agreement is not the same as practice. A value can be sincere and still be difficult to enact; a strategy can be responsible and still remain distant from the pressures, dependencies, and routines of everyday life and work.
This article uses the word liveable in a precise sense. It does not mean easy, comfortable, or free of sacrifice. Nor does it mean reducing ambition until nothing important is asked of us. A sustainable practice becomes liveable when people can understand what it asks of them, influence how it takes shape, adapt it as conditions change, and continue it without depending on constant exceptional effort.
The central question is therefore not only whether an action is environmentally or socially preferable. It is whether responsible action can become meaningful, repeatable, supported, and durable within the conditions in which life and work actually happen.
When urgency becomes weight
Climate change, biodiversity loss, inequality, and resource pressure require urgency. But urgency does not automatically become durable action. It can also become a weight that people are expected to carry individually: know more, consume less, choose correctly, remain hopeful, and accept responsibility for problems that extend far beyond their own reach.
In organisations, sustainability can arrive in a similar form: another target, reporting requirement, project, meeting, or value statement added to work that is already full. The ambition may be legitimate, but when priorities, time, authority, skills, and routines remain unchanged, responsibility is added without corresponding capacity. Sustainability then depends on a few committed people repeatedly compensating for the system around them.
That arrangement may generate activity for a period, but it rarely produces continuity. When the project ends, the enthusiastic colleague leaves, budgets tighten, or operational pressure rises, the new practice loses momentum. The problem is easily interpreted as fatigue, resistance, or insufficient commitment even when the deeper issue is that the work was never made sufficiently possible.
Serious sustainability work should not be measured only by how demanding the message sounds. Its seriousness should also be visible in the conditions created for people to respond.
From lifestyle to life conditions
Sustainability is often presented as a question of lifestyle: what people buy, eat, drive, avoid, reduce, or support. Individual choices matter, but they are never made in an empty space. They are shaped by infrastructures, prices, working hours, housing, transport, care responsibilities, social expectations, available knowledge, technologies, and the options that organisations and institutions make normal.
This is where social practice theory remains foundational. Elizabeth Shove’s critique of the familiar attitude-behaviour-choice model challenged the idea that sustainability transitions can be explained mainly by changing individual preferences. Practices are organised through combinations of meanings, skills, materials, routines, and systems of provision. The implication is not that people lack responsibility, but that responsibility has to be situated in the conditions that make particular actions more or less possible.
A parent who wants to travel differently, an employee asked to reduce waste, or a manager trying to change procurement may all be willing to act. Their actual possibilities still depend on schedules, contracts, budgets, decision rights, colleagues, suppliers, and infrastructure. When these conditions are ignored, a systemic constraint can be reframed as a personal shortcoming.
Moving from lifestyle to life conditions changes the starting point. Instead of asking only why people do not make the preferred choice, we also ask how the situation makes some practices easy, others difficult, and still others almost impossible.
The aim is not to remove individual responsibility. It is to locate responsibility more accurately and identify where influence, resources, and decision-making need to meet.
Between perfection and excuse
Sustainability discussions often drift towards two unsatisfactory positions. One places the burden on the individual: if people cared enough, learned enough, or tried harder, change would follow. The other responds that systems determine everything, leaving little room for personal or professional responsibility.
A more useful position lies between these extremes. Conditions shape agency without eliminating it. People interpret, negotiate, resist, coordinate, learn, and create openings within the structures they inhabit, but they do so with unequal mandates, resources, and proximity to decisions. Responsibility should therefore be connected to actual influence while remaining attentive to the possibility of expanding that influence collectively.
This is situated agency: neither the heroic individual who must solve a systemic problem alone nor the passive actor who can do nothing until the whole system changes.
It asks what can be influenced here, what requires cooperation, what belongs at another level, and which conditions could be changed so that better action becomes possible. Recent Nordic research on co-created sustainability solutions reinforces this point: collaboration becomes durable when it is anchored among stakeholders, integrated into programmes and structures, and backed by real resourcing capacity rather than goodwill alone.
Perfection is equally unhelpful. It turns an evolving practice into a test of moral purity and makes inconsistency feel like failure. Responsible action becomes more durable when it can be examined, improved, resumed, and strengthened over time. The relevant standard is not flawless performance but whether practice is moving in a defensible direction, learning from consequences, and building greater capacity.
Sustainability as rhythm
Much sustainability communication is organised around moments: a campaign, launch, training day, strategy presentation, annual report, or public commitment. Moments can create attention and direction. Practice, however, is formed through rhythm – what happens repeatedly after attention moves elsewhere.
Rhythm appears in ordinary places: how meetings allocate time, how purchases are approved, which questions are asked before a decision, how new colleagues are introduced to expectations, where feedback travels, and whether someone is responsible for following up. These arrangements rarely look dramatic, but they determine whether sustainability remains an additional task or becomes part of how work is done.
A liveable practice must also survive variation. People become busy, budgets change, priorities collide, and unexpected events disrupt plans. If a practice only works under ideal conditions, it has not yet become robust. Continuity depends less on rigid repetition than on the ability to preserve direction while adapting the form.
This is why implementation is better understood as learning than as simple execution. Plans meet reality through testing, coordination, feedback, and adjustment.
A small experiment can reveal what a strategy requires in practice: who must be involved, which routine creates friction, where authority is missing, what assumptions do not hold, and what support allows the work to continue. The purpose of experimentation is not to reduce ambition to small actions, but to create a disciplined connection between ambition and evidence from everyday practice.
The conditions of continuity
If sustainable action is expected to last, five kinds of conditions deserve particular attention. They are not a checklist or a linear model. They are lenses for examining why an ambition becomes workable in one setting and repeatedly stalls in another.
Frames must be sufficiently clear. People need to understand the purpose, scope, priorities, and decision boundaries – not every detail in advance, but enough to know what the work is asking of them and what remains open.
Learning must remain possible during implementation. New practices cannot be designed entirely from a distance. People need opportunities to compare experience, question assumptions, notice consequences, and develop judgement while the work is underway.
Participation must include credible influence. Being invited to contribute is not the same as being able to shape a decision, routine, or outcome. Participation becomes meaningful when people can see how their knowledge changes what happens next.
Adaptation must be legitimate. When experience reveals that an approach does not fit the situation, people should be able to adjust it without appearing disloyal to the ambition. Adaptation is not the abandonment of direction; it is one way of protecting direction from a poor fit with reality.
Support must be visible in relationships, time, resources, coordination, and leadership. Encouraging words matter, but they cannot substitute for the capacity to act.
These conditions interact. Learning without influence produces insight that cannot travel. Influence without clarity can create confusion about responsibility. Adaptation without direction becomes drift, while direction without adaptation becomes rigidity. Support without time remains symbolic. The practical task is therefore to examine the configuration rather than to perfect each condition in isolation.
Recent European and Nordic research points in the same direction. Work on urban food transitions shows that political commitment, institutional integration, dedicated resources, cross-departmental coordination, stakeholder networks, continuous learning, and adaptive governance jointly shape whether promising local initiatives persist beyond project cycles. The important point is not that one universal recipe has been discovered. It is that continuity repeatedly depends on the relationships between actors and the conditions around their action.
The emotional capacity to remain engaged
Sustainability is not only technical or organisational. It is also emotional. People encounter grief, anxiety, anger, guilt, hope, attachment, and uncertainty when they consider what is being lost, what must change, and what their own contribution can realistically achieve.
Research on the inner dimensions of sustainability has argued that emotions, identities, beliefs, and values are often neglected when sustainability is treated only as an external systems problem. At the same time, work on eco-anxiety shows why difficult environmental emotions should not simply be pathologised or intensified. They can signal care, moral concern, and awareness, but they also require ways of being held and translated into proportionate action.
A liveable approach does not ask people to stop feeling the difficulty. It helps them remain engaged without being overwhelmed by it.
This means acknowledging uncertainty and loss without using them as instruments of pressure. It also means connecting concern to relationships, capability, and evidence that action can matter. Hope is more durable when it does not depend on confidence that everything will work out, but on the experience that people can act together, learn, and improve what becomes possible.
Sustainability at work
In organisations, sustainability becomes liveable when it enters the architecture of everyday work. It influences how priorities are set, how roles are defined, how procurement decisions are made, how trade-offs are discussed, how performance is followed, and how learning from small tests reaches the people who can change wider practice.
This is different from making everyone responsible for everything. Distributed responsibility without decision clarity can become organised ambiguity: many people are encouraged to act, but no one knows who can approve resources, change a routine, accept a trade-off, or carry the consequences.
Shared responsibility only becomes workable when contributions are connected to identifiable decisions and forms of support.
The same principle applies to workload. If sustainability is always performed after the ‘real work’ is complete, it remains structurally optional even when leaders describe it as strategic. Integration requires choices about what will stop, what will change, and where sustainability criteria become part of normal processes rather than another layer added on top.
A 30-day practice experiment can be useful at this point – not as proof that a complex problem has been solved, but as a disciplined way to learn. A team can test one revised meeting question, procurement criterion, feedback route, role boundary, or coordination routine. The experiment should be small enough to conduct, important enough to teach something, and connected to people who can use the result.
Making sustainability liveable
Before introducing another initiative, it can be useful to examine the situation more carefully. What practice is the ambition meant to change? What currently makes that practice likely? Who is close enough to influence it, and who controls the relevant resources or decisions? What must people learn through action rather than before it? Which relationships, routines, and forms of support would help the new practice persist?
These questions move the conversation away from abstract encouragement and towards practical responsibility. They also reveal whether the proposed action is being placed at the right level. Some changes can begin with an individual choice. Others require a team, an organisational decision, a partnership, infrastructure, or public policy. Good sustainability work connects these levels instead of pretending that one can substitute for the others.
The aim is not to remove tension. Sustainable change will continue to involve difficult choices, competing values, and incomplete knowledge. The aim is to create a way of working that can remain engaged with those tensions: ambitious enough to matter, reflective enough to learn, and practical enough to continue.
Ambition gives direction. Learning makes adaptation possible. Liveability creates the conditions for continuity. None is sufficient alone: direction without learning becomes rigid, learning without direction becomes diffuse, and both remain temporary if the practice cannot be carried in everyday life and work.
Sustainability becomes durable when responsible action no longer depends on exceptional people making exceptional efforts every day.
